Ahhh fashion! That lovely phenomena that helps me look my best by day and leaves me dreaming of the infinite possibilities by night. I must say, I do love the fact that one day in human history someone decided it was time to cover parts of the body and then later on down the road someone else decided  that those things we covered our bodies with needed to be adorned. And like that, the rest is fashion history. (more…)

Divine Decadence

In re-evaluating my fashion sense I by chance came across these absolutely marvelous photographs of a remarkable tradition of self adornment by the Surma and Mursi group within East Africa’s Omo Valley. These images moved me so much that they shifted the direction of some of my posters. See more beautiful images by photographer Hans Silvester and read the article on this beautiful tradition here.

Fashion Forward

In June of this year I had the wonderful opportunity to be apart my day job’s annual fundraiser Green Gala at the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley. This year we took a slight detour and decided to celebrate the infinite wonders of plants through fashion. We decided to put on a sustainable fashion show that featured designs made with plant and other environmentally-friendly material set amongst the gorgeous backdrop of our Redwood Grove. It was amazing to see how many local and non-local designers were implementing sustainability in their craft. This was definitely an “aha” moment for me. So much so that it was one of the major inspirations for my next project which you will all hear about soon. For now a few images from the event:

After a long few hours of Lola wreaking havoc at the store and dropping groceries off at my parent’s house, Lara dropped me off at home. I returned to my parents’ house the next day to celebrate. When I returned to my apartment, a sense of relief washed over me. Finally, I was in solitude and quiet. As I settled into my couch, my phone rang, it was “The Indian Lady”, a woman who has been a neighbor of my parents for more than 20 years.

Running Voices

I recently started training for a sprint (a shorter version of a triathlon) to take place next year. Why? Because there was a time that I would have much rather watched a Spanish soap opera than run from my apartment to the next block. In my emancipation I made a commitment to be confident in my abilities and to never again fall back on “I can’t”. So you can imagine my delight when I came across this great feature in the NYTimes.com that documents the experiences of people like you and me who are telling themselves, “I can!” is awe-inspiring to say the least.
